Dear Lower School Families:

Dan VorenbergGreetings from Cherry Bottom Road!  With school still a couple weeks away, we are sending information along to you in preparation for the 2007-2008 school year.  It is our hope that we have provided all our families with everything needed to begin the school year.  The following information will confirm your sense that the beginning of the new school year is just around the corner.  Included with this newsletter are the student supply list, a copy of the dress code, key calendar dates for Lower School, CASE (Children's After School Experience) information and registration form and the emergency/transportation information card.

Emergency/Transportation Information Card
Please type or print clearly in ink the information requested on the emergency/transportation information card.  A separate card should be completed for each child.  This information is kept in both the classroom and in the Lower School Office and should be legible for photocopying.  Students should bring the card to school with them on Thursday, August 23, and give it to their classroom teacher.  On the back of the card, please indicate the mode of transportation home for the first day of school.
Meet the Teacher Event -- Ice Cream Social

Carpool Instructions
Lower School students who go home by car are picked up on the west side of the building through an organized carpool procedure.  For logical safety reasons, children may not be picked up in front of the school where buses wait.  Teachers will help children to the proper waiting area for buses or carpool.  Carpool tags will be available for pick up at the Lower School Meet the Teacher event.  Those not picked up at that time will be sent home with the children on the first day of school.
First Day of School
Classes begin on Thursday, August 23, at 8:05 a.m. and end at 3:10 p.m. (see attached documents for information regarding PreK and Kindergarten schedules).  Many of our students will arrive by bus and some by carpool in the morning.  If you are new to The Columbus Academy this year, you may want to bring your child to school on the first day to meet his/her teacher.  Things settle in quickly, and you can soon be on your way.  Guides will be available to help you find your particular classroom.

We are looking forward to an exciting 2007-2008 school year.  Enjoy the rest of the summer, and we'll see you at the Ice Cream Social on August 21!

Respectfully,
Dan Vorenberg
Head of Lower School

Academy theater troupe performing on August 11-12 and 17-18 at 7:30 p.m.

The newly formed "Shots in the Dark" independent theater troupe, directed by Academy seniors Patrick McGregor II and Mary Parker, will be staging four free performances of Pat Cook's "The Long Red Herring."  The shows will begin at 7:30 p.m. on August 11, 12, 17 and 18 in Schoedinger Theatre.  The summer theater troupe is run by Academy students for past, present and future Academy students.  Besides McGregor and Parker, other members of the cast include Rachel Killoren, India Myers, Chelsea Arata, Madison Lee, Linda Mullin, Emily Downes, Brenden Patch, Garrett May, Zeshawn Ali and Leigha Grosh.

Viking Corner Ad The Viking Corner is Columbus Academy's new store managed by Parents' Association of Columbus Academy volunteers (formerly PACA Shopper).  Viking Corner will feature Columbus Academy spirit wear, school supplies, novelty and special order items, and dress-code-approved polar fleece and sweatshirts (sweatshirts are NOT dress code for MS).  Student accounts are available for a minimun of $25.  Students can charge on their accounts (eliminating the need to have cash at school), which are separate from school accounts.  Parents will be notified when their child's account balance is $5, at which point they may recharge the account.  Please fill out and return the Student Account Form.  In addition, PE uniforms (two t-shirts and one pair of shorts for $30) will also be sold.  These uniforms will not be required for the school's PE classes until the 2008-09 school year but will be sold this year.  Please fill out and return the PE Uniform Order Form (size chart).
The Viking Corner will open on Monday, August 20, in the Dining Hall!
