Columbus Academy members make trip to China
|
For three weeks during the month of July, the
Columbus Academy East Asia Institute sent CA teachers Mary Kate Hermann (US history) and Elaine Boaz (kindergarten) to Hefei in Anhui
Province, China. Columbus
Academy students Linda
Mullin and Leigha Grosh also participated in this experience. Kyle Tong, director of the East Asia
Institute, also joined the group for the first week of the program. The teachers were involved in a training
session designed by the East Asia Institute for the Hefei Education Bureau
while the students participated in a language immersion program by living in
local homes and attending classes. The
participants also visited the city of Shanghai,
the gardens of Suzhou and the majesty of
Huangshan (Yellow
Mountains). To see a photo gallery of the trip, click here.

A note regarding supervision at extracurricular events
|
| Columbus Academy students greatly
appreciate the support of parents and fellow students at various school
performances, concerts and interscholastic athletic contests. While the school does provide security at
events where there is likely to be a good-sized audience or a large number of
spectators, it is not the school's responsibility to provide supervision for
boys and girls who attend events outside of the normal school hours. Especially at a large outdoor venue such as a
night-time football game, we ask that parents be vigilant of where their
children are and with whom they may be interacting.

| Columbus Academy graduate named finalist in statewide essay contest |
Courtney Hoyles '07
was recently selected as one of 10 finalists in the State of Ohio Laws of Life Essay Contest. Ohio Partners in Character Education (OPCE) -
a statewide network of schools, community organizations, businesses and
educators working to improve and advance character education in Ohio - coordinates the
judging of the statewide contest. Hoyles, currently a freshman at Ohio Northern
University, will attend an
awards banquet in October, where finalists are awarded cash prizes. Several members of the US English department
(most notably Jeff Arndt, Andy Morris and Stefan Farrenkopf) helped her through
the process of writing and submitting the essay, which described how a grueling
paper route helped teach her important life lessons.
