Academy eighth-graders visit Washington, D.C.
DC TripAs has been done for many, many years, CA's eighth grade traveled to Washington, D.C., in mid-October to see and learn more about our nation's capital.  Among many great experiences, this year's lucky almost-Upper-Schoolers spent over 30 minutes talking with former U.S. Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O'Connor and were treated to 30 minutes with U.S. Senator (D-Ohio) Sherrod Brown.  Justice O'Connor shared with the Academy students her struggles as a woman to gain acceptance as an attorney and her reluctance to be considered for a judicial position, while Senator Brown discussed the many initiatives on which he is currently working.  The other highlights of the trip were visits to the many museums and monuments, as well as four Academy eighth-graders laying an honorary wreath upon the Tomb of the Unknowns at Arlington National Cemetery.  To see Susan Carter's photos of the trip, please click here.
Pair of CA cellists to perform in youth orchestras
Two Upper Schoolers recently earned recognition for their talents playing the cello.  Collin Sims '09 will perform at Severance Hall in Cleveland as part of the Cleveland Orchestra Youth Orchestra (COYO) on Sunday, November 18, at 3 p.m.  This is Sims' third season with COYO, which is considered one of the top youth orchestras in the country.  Also, Ruthie Cordray '11 recently made second chair in the 2007 OMEA South Central Regional Orchestra, which will perform Nov. 16-18 at Pickerington Central High School.  The honor also automatically qualifies Cordray to represent Columbus Academy in the OMEA All-State Orchestra.

Varsity boys soccer squad advances to Tuesday's regional semifinals
Field HockeyThe Columbus Academy varsity boys soccer team claimed a district title on Saturday with a 2-0 victory over Bloom-Carroll.  With the win, the Vikes improved their record to 13-3-2 and advanced to the regional semifinals against Worthington Christian on Tuesday.  That 7 p.m. match will be played at Dublin Jerome High School (click here for directions).  Admission is $6 per OHSAA regulations... Unfortunately, the Vikes' football, field hockey and cross country seasons came to an end over the weekend.  On the gridiron, CA finished its season with a 4-6 record.  To see photos from Friday's Senior Night, visit this week's Around Academy gallery... The field hockey team defeated Upper Arlington 5-1 (see AA gallery) on Wednesday but then lost to Watterson 2-0 on Saturday, finishing with a 16-1-2 record and just one step away from the state final four... The Academy cross country squads had two runners competing in Saturday's regional meet at Pickerington North High School.  Nicole Humphrey '09 finished 34th with a time of 21:25 while Adam Kulewicz '08 placed 92nd with a time of 19:10.  Margaret Coons '10 was named First Team All-MSL Ohio while honorable mentions nods went to Kulewicz, Tyler Slayman '08, Zachary Harner '11 and Michael Berger '09.  For more sports results, check out this week's press clippings.
Middle Schoolers allowed to wear costumes to school on Wednesday
Candy BinAll Middle School students will be able to wear costumes to school on Wednesday, October 31, to celebrate Halloween. This will be a regular academic day and costumes should be worn that will not interfere with students ability to engage in classroom activities. Please keep in mind that our Middle School students interact many times throughout the day with the Lower School students and we will be spectators at the Lower School parade at the end of the school day. Therefore, costumes should not be gory or frightening to younger children.  Additionally, costumes should appropriately cover the body and cross-dressing, weapons and masks are not permitted. Students not wearing costumes should be in normal dress code.  Lower Schoolers can bring their costumes to school and change into them for the traditional Halloween Parade at 2:30 p.m. on Wednesday.  Additionally, all Middle Schoolers are encouraged to bring at least one piece of Halloween candy to school on Thursday or Friday to help support Operation Buckeye, which sends care packages to troops in Iraq and Afghanistan.  A bin (photo above) to collect the candy is located outside of Mrs. Corrigan's room (Van Syckel C111).
Food Drive ends Friday, Clothing Drive begins Sunday
Food CartCA families who wish to support the Ten "Can" Food Drive should bring or send in non-perishable food items with their children through Friday, November 2.  Grocery carts (courtesy of Gahanna Meijer) will be positioned at carpool drop-offs and school entrances so that students do not have to tote heavy items.  The goal is to provide:  7 dinners, 2 breakfasts, 2 lunches for each of the 35 sponsored families.  Items still needed this week:  chicken/tuna helper, canned meats (chicken and tuna), complete boxed dinners, canned/dried potatoes, gravy, canned fruit (all kinds), Chunky soups, crackers, pasta, spaghetti sauce, pancake mixes, syrup, pizza kits, peanut butter and jelly.  Middle School students are still needed for the Make-A-Meal activity from 3:15-5:15 p.m. on Thursday, November 1.  Thank you to all the parents who quickly filled the adult volunteer spots.

The Kids for Kids Clothing Drive begins Sunday and runs through next Thursday, November 8.  Please drop off gently used or new items in clean and good condition for kids of all ages (newborn-18 years).  Outfits are created, gift-wrapped and given to the sponsored children as holiday gifts.  Cash donations and new items are greatly appreciated.

To volunteer, please contact Christy Bening at 509-2294 or bening@columbusacademy.org.  Volunteers from prior years will tell you that it is both a fun and a heartwarming experience.  To see details of all CA Service Board Holiday Projects, please click here.
Visit the 2007 CA Book Fair before it closes on Thursday, November 1
Book FairThe annual Book Fair opened Wednesday, October 24, and is in full gear.  2007 Book Fair Co-Chairs Tamara Nicola and Tammy Bender have this to say:  "Thank you to the parents who have already visited, browsed and purchased; we're off to a great start!  If you haven't already stopped by, please come see us in the Multipurpose Room (aka CASE Room) in the Lower School wing.  The decorations alone are worth the trip to see!  Kudos to our remarkably talented decorations committee:  Terri Lane, Kristi Carlin, Michelle Lippert and Kara Razek.  As a reminder, new this year, the entire Book Fair inventory is also listed online for your convenience by clicking here.  Please see the attached flier (click here) for further details.  We look forward to seeing you there!"

Informational meeting on Spring Break trip to Mexico planned for Nov. 5
The Monarch butterfly's migration to Mexico is one of nature's most incredible journeys.  Join Dianne Griffin (LS Science Teacher) and Sean Cullinan (Director of Technology) on a trip into the heart of Mexico to see the monarch's winter habitat and the adaptations monarchs have for survival.  On the Spring Break trip, you will tour Mexico City, visit the students of Angangueo, see the Volcano of Paricutin (included in many versions of the Seven Natural Wonders of the World), tour the colonial town of Morelia and see the Pyramids of Teotihuacan.  A meeting to discuss the March 15-22 trip will be held at 8 a.m. on Monday, November 5, in Mrs. Griffin's classroom (Van Syckel C008).
Keep an eye out for your Celebration of Leadership invitation
Pep RallySoon, all parents will receive an invitation to Academy's Fourth Annual Fund Speaker Series event Celebration of Leadership, with special guest Christopher Gardner.  Gardner's extraordinary rags-to-riches story is the subject of his autobiography and the hit film "The Pursuit of Happyness."  The Celebration of Leadership event is offered as a thank you and stimulus to CA's Annual Fund leadership donors (gifts of $2,500 or more).  On November 28, Mr. Gardner will kick-off the day's events with an address to the Upper School student body and faculty/staff at 4 p.m., followed by a reception and general lecture in the evening.  His afternoon address to the Upper School will be videotaped and made available on the school's Web site.  For more information, please contact Erin Saurborn, Director of Annual Giving, at 614-509-2256 or erin_saurborn@columbusacademy.org.
