Photos of special guests highlight online galleries
Keith BeauchampIn addition to last week's boys basketball games and wrestling meet, be sure to visit this week's Around Academy gallery, including photos from a first grade science class, a Middle School swim meet and presentations by two special guests - former professional basketball player Lawrence Funderburke and award-winning filmmaker Keith Beauchamp.  Funderburke was on campus to speak with the Upper School economics club while Beauchamp spent last Friday introducing and discussing his moving documentary "The Untold Story of Emmett Louis Till" with Middle and Upper Schoolers.  In preparation for Martin Luther King Jr. Day, the documentary gave CA students insight into one of the most dramatic events of the American Civil Rights Movement.
Currier Lecture Series schedule and update
Dr. Paul FarmerOn Wednesday, February 6, Dr. Paul Farmer will serve as this year's guest speaker for the Phil Currier Lecture Series.  His schedule on campus includes a lunchtime gathering with a group of students who have read Tracy Kidder's bestseller "Mountains Beyond Mountains: The Quest of Dr. Paul Farmer, A Man Who Would Cure the World."  From 2-3 p.m., Dr. Farmer will speak with the entire Upper School and the seventh grade in Schoedinger Theatre.  The free lecture to the general public will begin at 7:30 p.m.  In order to give all CA families the opportunity to reserve their seats, please send an e-mail to currierlecture@columbusacademy.org (with your name and number of seats that you will need) by this Thursday, January 24.  After that, reservations will open up to the general public.  To view the event's promotional poster, please click here.
Academy senior breaks school swimming record
After setting a school record in the 100-yard breaststroke (58.55 seconds) at the Northeast Classic Swimming and Diving Invitational in Canton recently, Academy senior Michael Lopresti was named Athlete of the Week both by The Columbus Dispatch and "Mr. High School Sports" Larry Larson on WTVN 610 AM (click here to listen).  Also in this week's press clippings, recent basketball, swimming and wrestling results.  And for CA's new winter sports program, click here.

Music department prepares for Saturday's OMEA Solo and Ensemble event
The music department is busy preparing for this Saturday's OMEA (Ohio Music Educators Association) Solo and Ensemble Adjuducated Event from 8:20 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Pickerington North High School.  Some CA students are singing or playing solos and others are performing in an ensemble, while the Camerata is performing as a Chamber Ensemble.  Students have been preparing this music for months and are excited to take their hard work in front of an OMEA judge to get a rating and comments.  Anyone that would like to come out to watch our fine musicians should pick up a schedule of events (click here for schedule) and directions from one of the directors.
Columbus Academy Admissions Office introduces new Viewbook
Admissions ViewbookThe Admissions Office has issued a new Viewbook that captures the spirit of Columbus Academy in quite a picturesque way.  Written by Upper School librarian Deb Tong and photographed by art instructor and yearbook advisor Cindy Wilson, the Viewbook is an inspiring addition to Academy's promotional materials.

PACA hosting Parent Education Seminars in the coming weeks
The Parents' Association of Columbus Academy (PACA) will be hosting several free Parent Education Seminars in the coming weeks.  The first - titled "Raising Resilient Children and Adolescents" by Robert Brooks, a clinical psychology faculty member at Harvard Medical School - is scheduled for 1:00-2:30 p.m. on Monday, February 4, with rebroadcasts on February 5 (3:15-4:45 p.m.) and February 12 (5:30-7:00 p.m.).  Specific strategies for nurturing self-discipline, self-esteem, responsibility, caring, hope and resilience will be discussed.  The second seminar - "The Childhood Roots of Adult Happiness" by accomplished author and Hallowell Center founder Edward Hallowell - is slated for 3:35-4:45 p.m. on Thursday, February 5, with a rebroadcast from 8:15-9:45 a.m. on Monday, March 3.  A five-step plan for promoting successful learning and life-long joy that parents - and others - can use to give children the gift of happiness will be discussed.  All seminars will take place in the Trustees' Room at Academy Hall.
The Antiques Show Auction is looking for a few good things...

Please claim all Lost & Found items before sent to charity on February 14
The Lost and Found areas on campus are overflowing so please check and claim any items belonging to you or your children.  There will be a school-wide "Lost & Found Display" on tables in front of Morris Hall on February 7-8 so please stop by during conferences to claim your lost items.  This display will include all LS, MS, US and PE lost-and-found items.  Items not claimed by February 14 will be sent to charity.  For more information, please contact Margie Kelley at 614-939-9601 or ey6@fastmail.fm.
Middle School to perform "The Adventures of Tom Sawyer" on Feb. 1-2

Get-togethers planned for parents of Upper School sophomores
