"The Adventures of Tom Sawyer" opens Friday
Tom Sawyer Publicity PhotoLook for previews of the upcoming Middle School play "The Adventures of Tom Sawyer" in this week's Gahanna newspapers.  Show times are 7:30 p.m. on both Friday, Feb. 1, and Saturday, Feb. 2, in Schoedinger Theatre.  Tickets are free for CA students and $5 for everyone else.  Order your tickets by clicking hereSubmit order form with payment to David Block.  Checks should be made payable to The Columbus Academy.  To receive tickets prior to the performance, please include a self-addressed envelope.  For more information on the play, including cast and calendar, click here.
Currier Lecture moved to CA's North Gym (new gym)
Dr. Paul FarmerWithout any media publicity to date, the 2008 Currier Lecture Series scheduled for 7:30 p.m. on February 6 has already overbooked the 430-seat Schoedinger Theatre.  As a result, the speech by Dr. Paul Farmer will take place in the 1,200-seat North Gym.  Those who have already reserved seats should check in at the Will Call table in the athletics lobby on the night of the event for their seats.  General admission seating will be available up until the event but reservations should still be made in advance, if possible, by contacting Kyle Tong at (614) 509-2282 or currierlecture@columbusacademy.org.  To see the updated event poster, please click here.

Upper School teacher Kyle Tong named International Educator of the Year
Kyle TongUpper School history teacher Kyle Tong has been named the International Educator of the Year by the Columbus Council on World Affairs.  This award honors a unique K-12 educator whose commitment to international education and awareness serves as a stellar example to their students, their colleagues and their local community.  The Columbus Council on World Affairs is strongly committed to supporting educators in the advancement of global understanding and the reduction of cultural stereotypes.  Tong will be honored at the Council's luncheon on February 19.  To see photos of Tong in action, see this week's Around Academy gallery, which also includes shots of Middle School girls basketball, a pancake breakfast fundraiser and CA's winter blood drive (which netted 45 much-needed pints).
Viking boys and girls claim Mid-State League swimming & diving crowns
Varsity Swim MeetThe Columbus Academy boys and girls swimming and diving teams both took first place at the Mid-State League Championships on Saturday.  The Viking boys were led by senior Michael Lopresti, who earned titles in the 200 IM and 100 breaststoke in addition to anchoring the winning 400 freestyle relay team that also consisted of Jackson Humphrey '10, Andrew Nash '09 and David Karikomi '09.  Humphrey also won the 500 freestyle and teamed with Will Sherman '10, William Rosler '11 and Dustin Chan '11 to claim the 200 medley relay.  On the girls' side, titles were won for CA by freshman Natalie Ritter in one-meter diving and senior Paulina Canini in the 50 freestyle.  Canini also anchored the winning 400 free relay squad consisting of Natalie Szykowny '10, Laura Caplinger '08 and Ali Dillon '09.  To read a feature story on Canini and to catch up on all the latest sports results, check out this week's press clippings.
League of Women Voters of Ohio coming to Academy on Tuesday
League of Women VotersThe Upper School Political Club will be hosting the League of Women Voters on Tuesday, January 29, at 12:45 p.m. in the Trustees' Room.  Everyone is invited, especially juniors and seniors who will be eligible to vote in the primaries and/or general election this year.  Discussion will focus on how to register to vote and why it is important to get involved.  Pizza will be provided.  For more information of the League of Women Voters of Ohio, please click here.

Strings Coffee SoloThe seventh- and eighth-grade strings and the Upper School Viking Strings presented the first-ever "Coffee House Concert" in the theater lobby on Friday night.  In addition to soothing chamber music, the event featured hot drinks, munchies and candlelight to help chase away the winter blues.  Click here to see the photos.  Results from Saturday's OMEA event will be posted in next week's Viking Voice.
Date for second Parent Education Seminars incorrectly listed last week
Please make sure you have the correct dates for the upcoming Parent Education Seminars, which are free and hosted by the Parents' Association of Columbus Academy (PACA).  The first - titled "Raising Resilient Children and Adolescents" by Robert Brooks, a clinical psychology faculty member at Harvard Medical School - is scheduled for 1:00-2:30 p.m. on Monday, February 4, with rebroadcasts on February 5 (3:15-4:45 p.m.) and February 12 (5:30-7:00 p.m.).  The second seminar - "The Childhood Roots of Adult Happiness" by accomplished author and Hallowell Center founder Edward Hallowell - is slated for 3:35-4:45 p.m. on Thursday, February 28 (not Feb. 5 as listed last week), with a rebroadcast from 8:15-9:45 a.m. on Monday, March 3.  All seminars will take place in the Trustees' Room.  Please click here for more detailed information on the seminars.
