Activities scheduled for Valentine's Day
|
At 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, each Lower School
classroom will have its own Valentine's Day party. Students in grades 1-4 will also participate
in Jump Rope for Heart throughout the day, trying to surpass last year's total
of $16,125 raised for the American Heart Association. Valentine cards and gifts are not allowed to
be exchanged in the Middle School.
Parents will bring in snacks for the Middle Schoolers during their
advisory period. In the Upper School,
the Service Board student group will sell red carnations and little bags of
chocolate kisses for $1 all next week.
Those items will then be delivered by the Service Board on Friday during
classes. All proceeds go towards funding
the Faculty and Staff Appreciation Luncheon (click here for photos) that was held last Tuesday in
conjunction with the Student Council.
Also, a group of ninth-grade French students will sell crepes and
serenades this year. For $2, students
can send crepes to other students and for another $1 can have that student
serenaded by one of the French students on Thursday. That money will be used to fund French class
field trips. |
Get to the Heart of the Matter...
|
Make this Valentine's Day special for our
school, our teachers and our children.
Give to the Annual Fund today. A
very special volunteer will be in touch with you this week to talk about your
support. No gift is too small and all
gifts are critical to the health of our school.
You can give securely online by clicking here. Thank you!

Currier Lecture, Senior Nights, Appreciation Lunch highlight galleries
|
Although there is no Around Academy gallery this
week, there are still plenty of photos for you to peruse. Check out the images from Dr. Paul Farmer's visit to Columbus
Academy on Wednesday as
part of the Currier Lecture Series. Also,
be sure to view David Block's photos from Senior Nights for boys basketball and wrestling. And take a look at these
images from last Tuesday's Faculty and Staff Appreciation Luncheon sponsored by
the Columbus Academy Service Board and Student Council. A big "thank you" goes to everyone involved
in all of last week's events!

Two Columbus Academy students perform with All-State Orchestra
|
Ruthie Cordray, a freshman cellist from Worthington, was recently
selected for the 2008 OMEA All-State Orchestra, joining senior Sheri Zweier - a
clarinetist from Blacklick - as the only CA students on the prestigious roster. Cordray qualified for the spot by auditioning
for the OMEA Regional Orchestra and earning second chair. She is the seventh chair out of 14 cellists
in the All-State Orchestra, which performed Friday night at the Cincinnati Convention Center. Click here to see a photo of Ruthie and Sheri from Friday night's performance, provided by Kathy Cordray. Also performing over the weekend were Kelsey
'13 and Collin Sims '09, who played at Soldiers and Sailors Hall in Pittsburgh on Saturday as
members of the Contemporary Youth Orchestra.

Academy chess masters continue to excel in recent tournaments
|
Columbus Academy students (left to right in photo) Rahul Ramaswamy '14,
Sriharsha Chandupatla '11, Brianna Conley '11 and John Hughes '14 recently
teamed up to place second at the 2008 Columbus Alternative High School Chess
Classic. Hughes went undefeated in the
statewide tournament's individual Open section to capture the first-place
trophy while Conley placed 10th.
Hughes is currently the top-rated chess player in the Ohio Chess
Association's Scholastic K-6 rankings and Ramaswamy - who finished in second place
behind Hughes at the state championship last December - is ranked 11th. Conley is the fourth-highest on the state's
Top Scholastic Girls ranking. In
national rankings, Conley is 86th for girls 16 and under while Hughes is ranked 35th in the
nation for 11-year-olds.

Viking swimmers and boys basketball teams claim titles over the weekend
|
Congratulations to all of the Columbus Academy
swimmers for a strong showing at the sectional meet on Saturday, including those
seniors who completed their swimming careers on a high note: Charlotte
Alexander, Megan Congrove, Lauren Dozer, Pete Downing, Ryan Fuchs, Brendan
Patch, Justin Richmond-Decker, Tyler Slayman and Alex Tomko. Sectional titles were won by Paulina Canini
(50 free, 100 free), Michael Lopresti (100 breast, 200 IM) and Jackson Humphrey
(500 free). Best of luck to all of the
AquaVikes advancing to the district meet at Ohio University
this Friday and Saturday. Photos from the
entire swimming and diving season by Sheri Dillon will be included in next
week's Viking Voice. Also,
congratulations to the varsity boys basketball team for claiming its first
outright MSL Ohio Division crown since 1989 (the Vikes shared the title with Licking Valley last season) and to the boys
seventh-grade hoopsters for winning their league tournament last Thursday. Both varsity basketball programs open
district play on Tuesday with the girls against Fisher Catholic at 6:15 p.m.
(at Licking Heights)
and the boys against Liberty Union at 8:00 p.m. (at Newark). |
Wade, Beatley, Zitsman featured in this week's press clippings
|
Academy senior Colton Wade (pictured) has been nominated by
U.S. Rep. Pat Tiberi (R-Genoa Township) and U.S.
Sen. Sherrod Brown (D-Avon) for a chance to attend the United
States Naval Academy in Annapolis,
Maryland. Wade, who joins 70 other students statewide
who were nominated for a service academy by Brown and who is among 30 nominated
by Tiberi, plans to study either aeronautical or mechanical engineering with a
minor in business if he is chosen to attend the Naval Academy. Also in this week's press clippings, Viking
basketball standout Jake Beatley is considered a district player-of-the-year candidate
as well as one of the area's top dunkers, and CA junior Ben Zitsman offers up
another First Person column, this time humorously recalling his Middle School
talent show experience.

Columbus Academy's procedure for weather-related school closings
|
| The decision to close school due to inclement
weather or other unusual circumstances is normally made by the Headmaster in
consultation with the Facilities Director.
Once the decision is made, families will be notified by the 3N emergency
contact system (and also, for now, by the parents' chain calling process until
3N becomes more familiar to everyone).
In addition, the announcement is made on the school's official Web site,
www.columbusacademy.org, as well as on all three local major television
stations and the following radio stations: WTVN-610AM, WBNS-97FM and
WFRD-880AM. If you have not yet
registered with 3N (you should have received an invitation to join recently by
email), please do so as soon as possible.
If you have any questions or concerns regarding the 3N notification
system, please contact Technology Director Sean Cullinan at (614) 509-2245 or cullinan@columbusacademy.org . Please note that the decision to close Columbus Academy
is not tied to the closings of Columbus
Public Schools or any other
school district. Because of the vagaries
of Columbus area weather and because our students come from such a wide
geographical range, it is possible that conditions in some areas may not be
especially safe for driving, even while there may be no risk in other
areas. Given these circumstances, Columbus Academy respects that each family must
make its own decision about safe travel to school, and the school will not
penalize students who are late or absent due to poor travel conditions.
