Civil rights figure visits CA's Middle School
|
|
Ruby Bridges, one of the first African-American
children to attend a white school in Louisiana
and who is depicted in this famous Norman Rockwell painting, visited Columbus Academy last Wednesday. She spoke with Middle School students about
the Civil Rights Movement and then signed a copy of her book, "Through My
Eyes," for all of them. To see photos of
her visit, check out this week's Around Academy gallery. In accordance with her contract, no pre-publicity was allowed for the event and no parents were allowed to attend.

Basketball squad loses in overtime on Sunday
|
The Columbus Academy boys basketball team (21-5)
gave second-ranked Anna (25-1) all it could handle in the Division III regional
finals Sunday but ended up with a heartbreaking 75-74 loss in overtime at
Wright State's Nutter Center. The Vikes
had defeated Cincinnati Shroder Paideia on Wednesday by the score of 68-66 to
reach the elite eight. By making it to
the regional finals, the 2008 Vikings matched the school's 1989 squad for the
longest postseason run since the state runner-up team of 1981. Click here to see photos from last Wednesday's regional semifinal win, provided by
David Block and Cindy Wilson. |

Columbus Academy yearbook staff gains national recognition
|
The 2008 Caravel (being edited by seniors Shreya
Kundur, Yamini Jadcherla and Anna Thompson) has been selected by Taylor
Publishing to be printed as a national sample.
The CA yearbooks will be given to Taylor
representatives for marketing purposes and used as a teaching tool at various
journalism workshops throughout the United States. This is the first time Academy has been
honored in this way. Click here for a photo of this year's staff. Also, the cover of the 2007
yearbook (edited by 2007 grads Katie Chioran, Kristine Lombardi, Kevin Lee,
Kelsey Schreiber and Elizabeth Young) and a two-page spread (pages 40-41)
designed and written by Kelly Simmons '10 (click here for photo) will be
featured in Taylor Publishing's "Yearbook Yearbook." "This company prints approximately 10,000
yearbooks nationwide," said advisor Cindy Wilson,
"so it is quite an honor to have any part of a book featured, let alone a cover
and a spread."

Academy senior signs tender contract with NAHL defending champs
|
Blake Edwards, a senior at Columbus Academy
and a defenseman on the Ohio AAA Blue Jackets U18 squad, has signed a tender
contract to play for the St. Louis Bandits, who are the defending North American Hockey League champions.
Signing a tender contract with an NAHL team means that player and the
NAHL club have made a mutual commitment to each other for the upcoming season
and no team can recruit the player from that point forward. The tender contract binds the player's rights
to that team in the NAHL for the upcoming season, which lasts from mid-September to early April. Edwards hopes to use the experience as a springboard to a Division I hockey program. The NAHL is a 17-team Junior A Tier II league sanctioned by USA Hockey.
