Following the Monarch butterflies to Mexico

Mexico Trip 2A group of travelers from Columbus Academy spent eight days over Spring Break in Mexico, the winter sanctuary of the Monarch butterfly.  The CA contingent included Amanda Wilson '08, Tyler Kohman '14, Alex Li '16, Jacob Dach '17, Jacob Taub '17, Michalea Lai '18, Director of Technology Sean Cullinan and LS Science Teacher Dianne Griffin, as well as friends and family.  Trip highlights included: playing soccer, Uno, jumping rope and making Monarch God's eyes and origami with the students of Anganguao; watching the butterflies at El Rosario and Sierra Chincua, the butterfly sanctuaries; exploring San Juan Parangricutiro, a town covered by lava during the Paricutín eruption; shopping the open air market at Pátzcuaro; climbing the pyramids at Teotihuacan; walking around the Zocalo in Mexico City; and learning about Mexican culture in the Anthropological Museum in Mexico City.  To see Sean Cullinan's photos from the trip, please click here.

CA senior class explores the Windy City
Seniors in ChicagoThe class of 2008 traveled to Chicago for the annual senior trip the week before spring break.  Students were accompanied by senior advisors David Block, Stefan Farrenkopf, Pat Hogan, Doris Korda and Tim Morford '79.  "The weather was favorable, the travelers were good-natured, and a splendid time was had by all," said Morford, the senior class dean.  "After a six-hour coach ride and a quick lunch at the Navy Pier, our first destination in the Windy City was an outdoor ice rink in Millennium Park, where we went skating in the sunshine surrounded by skyscrapers and sculpture (including Cloudgate, a huge reflective egg).  We went to a Chicago blues club that evening for dinner and some great live blues.  The next morning we separated into two groups and visited the Chicago Board of Trade and the Federal Reserve Bank, and then we reunited for a trip to the Shedd Aquarium.  We went to the Lincoln Park Zoo and Conservatory that afternoon and then to Chinatown for dinner.  That evening, all agreed, was the highlight of the trip: an evening of comedy at Second City Comedy Club.  Thursday morning we visited the Art Institute of Chicago, including a special tour of the Hopper and Homer exhibitions, and then went to Geno's pizza for lunch.  The afternoon included a variety of options, including shopping on the Magnificent Mile and in the Clark & Belmont area, and taking in a view of the city and Lake Michigan from the top of the Hancock tower.  We finished our day with a dinner of tapas at Cafe Baba Reeba and a night at the theater to see the hit musical Wicked."  Click here for David Block's pictures in this week's Around Academy gallery, which also includes the MS assembly on Ethics of Speech with Artie Isaac '78, grant presentations at the PACA meeting and Bill Boaz's magic show for kindergartners!

Please note the US Band and Choir Concert has been moved to April 22
Guys and DollsThe Upper School Band and Choir Concert originally scheduled for April 30 has been moved to Tuesday, April 22, to avoid conflict with the May 1-3 Upper School musical Guys and Dolls.  The Band and Choir Concert will be held at 7:00 p.m. on April 22 in Schoedinger Theatre.  Guys and Dolls, meanwhile, will be staged May 1-3 at 7:30 p.m. in Schoedinger Theatre.  Tickets for the US musical are $5 (free for Academy students, faculty and staff).  Click here for the Guys and Dolls ticket order form.
Varsity lacrosse and boys tennis teams off to impressive starts
LacrosseThe CA varsity lacrosse team started its 2008 campaign in impressive fashion with a 17-1 victory over Westerville Central last Tuesday.  The Vikes hope to continue their dominance this evening at Dublin Scioto.  The JV squad begins its season with a 5:30 p.m. match followed by the varsity at 7:15.  The middle school lacrosse team, meanwhile, hosts Wellington today at 5:00 p.m. for its season opener.  Following a 4-1 win at Watterson, a 5-0 shutout of Lexington and a 3-2 thriller over Cincinnati Sycamore, the varsity boys tennis squad is showing its pedigree.  The Vikings have another big week on tap with a Wednesday contest at Upper Arlington and a weekend home slate consisting of Kings High School on Friday, St. Xavier on Saturday morning and University School in the afternoon.  The JV squad is 1-1 so far and hosts Hamilton Township tomorrow and Upper Arlington on Wednesday, while the middle school team debuts Tuesday against Ridgeview at Pickerington Central High School.  To read season previews of the boys tennis and girls lacrosse programs, click here for this week's press clippings.
Business office will be unavailable this week due to training
The business office of The Columbus Academy is transitioning to a new accounting software system.  Because of this software migration, between the hours of 8:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. from April 8-11, the business office staff will be in training for the new software.  During this training, the business office will not be available to respond to inquiries related to student accounts or to other school financial matters.  "We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause" said CA Chief Financial Officer Maggie Koerner, "and look forward to being better able to serve our school community once this software transition is completed."
