Antiques Show week is upon us!
|
The 28th
annual Antiques Show kicks off with the Gala Preview Party this Friday at 7 p.m. In addition to cocktails, wine tasting and
great food from some of Columbus' finest chefs, the event will feature the big
band sounds of the Park Avenue Jazz
Ensemble, a raffle of $5,000 or Academy tuition for one year and a Live Auction of sports, party and
travel packages. Tickets for Friday's
preview party are $125 per person.
Saturday's schedule begins with an appraisal
fair from 9:00-10:30 a.m. followed by the general show from 10:30 am. until
5:00 p.m. At least 34 exhibitors
from 14 different states will be on hand showing their antique wares. From 1-2 p.m., a lecture on container
gardening will be hosted by NBC4's Tom
McNutt and Urban Gardner's Christie
Nohle. Sunday's hours are noon to
5:00 p.m. and include hands-on garden
demonstrations for adults and children from 1-2 p.m. General admission tickets are $10 for both

Academy Antiques Show online auction. The money raised from this auction helps to
fund need-based financial aid and enrichment programs for the students of The
Columbus Academy. From antiques and
artworks to golf outings and sports memorabilia to special events and travel
(and much, much more), anyone can bid on

Plant/decoration sale and Masterworks raffle info
|
For the first time, this year's end-of-show plant and decoration sale will be held
on Sunday instead of Monday. Those wishing to purchase over 80 different
potted arrangements and garden accessories for their home and patio should stop
by the Garden Shop in the weight room
from 3-5 p.m. on Sunday. Also, the packet
of Masterworks raffle tickets distributed
to all Lower Schoolers and fifth-graders should be turned in to Michelle Saling in the LS Office this
week. Please click here for a letter explaining the reason for the raffle of the Masterworks from Cynthia Ziegler (LS Head Mother), Jeff Jeffers (LS Head Father) and LS
Head Dan Vorenberg. Each packet has 13 tickets. Parents
may purchase all or a portion of the tickets, if desired. They are
priced at $10 a piece, six for $50 or 13 for $100. If you have multiple
children at Academy, any combination of these tickets across your children's
grades earns you the discount. Extra ticket packets may be obtained from
the LS Office or at the Antiques Show Gala Preview Party on
April 25, where the winners will be drawn. And, YES - raffle

Lower School conference scheduler now activated
|
|
Lower School spring parent-teacher
conferences are just around the corner. Classroom teachers and specialist teachers
will be conferencing on Thursday, May 15,
and Friday, May 16. To schedule a conference with your child's classroom
teacher, please go to the Columbus Academy intranet (http://intranet.columbusacademy.org/)
and click on "Parent
Conferences - LS" on the left side.
The Lower School parent conference scheduler will
remain open until 4:00 p.m. on Wednesday,
May 7. For complete instructions on using the conference scheduler, please click here. Specialists will be available for five-minute
conferences in the Lower School Library on Thursday evening and all day
Friday. We encourage you to meet with specialists before, between or after your
classroom conferences. The
specialists will be available on Thursday, May 15, from 3:30-5:00 p.m. and
5:45-7:00 p.m. On Friday, May 16,
specialists will be available from 8:00-11:00 a.m. and noon-3:00 p.m. If you have any questions regarding the

Innovation Day brings snakes, ideas and technology to sixth-graders
|
The entire
sixth grade at Academy spent last Monday morning learning about recent innovations from experts in
various fields. The presentations
included the latest technology in heart procedures by cardiologist Dr. Shailesh Patel, climate change
adaptations in snakes by biology professor Dr.
Jessica Wooten, manufacturing advances with magnetic sensors and
super-cooled materials by Karen Link,
the science of engineering by Nelson
Kohman and a discussion of oil and gas exploration by Jam Khorrami. To see photos

Crockett, Beatley and trio of alums featured in this week's press clips

| Basketball seniors Chris Crockett and Jake
Beatley played in the Ohio All-Star
Classic at Upper Arlington
High School on
Sunday. Crockett scored 13 points and
Beatley 11 for the Jump 25 All-Stars team, which was coached by Academy's Chris Jones. More information on the game is available in

for several CA spring concerts have been moved around recently so here is the
most up-to-date listing for all band, choir and strings performances (all in

Varsity baseball squad has five home games remaining
|
|
The Columbus
Academy varsity baseball squad beat Northridge
12-5 on Saturday to improve its record to 4-6-1 on the season. Pitcher and first baseman Brian Black '09 leads the squad with a
batting average hovering around .500.
Freshman Nick Sergakis,
meanwhile, has been a nice surprise on the mound and at the plate as well. Along with lone senior Jeremy Lipp, other leaders on the team include catcher Jake Mercer '09, middle infielder Derek Wolf '09, shortstop/3B Albie Lavin '10 and 1B/pitcher/catcher Alex Johnson '09. The Vikes have five home games remaining,
including this Thursday and Friday at 5 p.m.

US musical "Guys and Dolls" to be staged at 7:30 p.m. on May 1-3
|
CA's Upper School Theater Program will perform "Guys and Dolls" on May 1-3 at 7:30
p.m. in Schoedinger Theatre. Tickets for
the US
musical are $5 (free for Academy students, faculty and staff). Playing the lead roles will be (clockwise

Two female Upper Schoolers excel at extracurricular events
|
Columbus Academy freshman Brianna Conley (left photo) was recently named state chess champion at the 2008 Ohio
All-Girls K-12 Championship. At the
April 12 tournament, Conley won four out of her five games to tie for the
title. Also, senior Sheri Zweier (right) will be principal
clarinet during two concerts this evening by the New Albany Symphony
Orchestra. The free and kid-friendly
performances are at 6:00 p.m. and 7:15 p.m. at the Jeanne B. McCoy Community Center for the Arts. Please call

Middle School musicians and singers recognized at recent competition
|
|
Results are in from the OMEA Junior High Solo and Ensemble Contest at Pickerington
Central High
School on April 12, and Columbus Academy
students performed very well. In all, 22
superior ratings were earned along with 11 excellent marks. Click here to see all of the CA students who received either I (superior) or II (excellent) ratings at the event.

Summer Experience programs are filling up fast so register now!

It is getting warm outside and time to get your
schedule ready for Summer Experience. The deadline for registrations is May 23.
So far, none of the programs are closed but registrations are coming in

New Parent Education Seminars scheduled for April 30 and May 2
|
Due to increased interest and positive response
from the parent community regarding the first two Parent Education Seminars earlier this year, a third seminar has
been planned for April 30 and May 2 in the Trustees' Room. The seminar, "How Great Schools Work: The Parent/School Partnership," is
presented by Patrick Bassett, who is
president of the National Association of Independent Schools. Designed for current and/or prospective
parents, it addresses choices in schools (public vs. private), how independent
schools work, what great schools have in common, what kids need from adults,
what schools need from parents and what parents need from schools. The first session will be held from 5:00-6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, April 30,
while the second will be from 8:15-9:45
a.m. on Friday, May 2.
