Academy junior places third in the nation
|
Columbus Academy junior Brianna
Conley captured third place in the 2008
All Girls National Chess Tournament in Dallas during the final weekend in
April. Competing against 192
participants from around the country, Conley won 4.5 out of 6 games to take
third in the 16-and-under category.
Earlier in the month, she had earned the title of state co-champion at the Ohio Girls Chess Championship. At the 2008 Middle School/High School
Championship this past weekend at Bexley
High School, both Conley
and fellow CA junior Sriharsha
Chandupatla received Honorable
Mention awards in the championship section by winning four out of six
matches.

Deadline for LS conference sign-ups is Wednesday
|

All
Lower School parents must sign up for teacher
conferences by 4:00 p.m. this Wednesday, May 7. Classroom teachers and specialist teachers
will be conferencing on Thursday, May 15,
and Friday, May 16. To schedule a conference with your child's
classroom teacher, please click here or go to the Columbus Academy intranet (http://intranet.columbusacademy.org/)
and click on "Parent Conferences - LS"
on the left side. For complete
instructions on using the conference scheduler, please click here. Specialists will be available for five-minute
conferences in the Lower School Library on Thursday evening and all day
Friday. We encourage you to meet with specialists before, between or after your
classroom conferences. The
specialists will be available on Thursday, May 15, from 3:30-5:00 p.m. and
5:45-7:00 p.m. On Friday, May 16,
specialists will be available from 8:00-11:00 a.m. and noon-3:00 p.m. If you have any questions regarding the
parent conference scheduler or parent conferences in general, please contact Michelle Saling at 614-337-4302. Also, LS CASE will be open from 3:00-6:00 p.m. on May 15 and all day on May 16 for conference times
only.

All parents invited to attend final PACA meetings
|
| All CA parents are invited to attend this Wednesday's PACA meeting at 8 a.m. in
the Trustees' Room (which will be followed by the final Grants Committee meeting).
Also, the PACA Annual end-of-year
meeting will take place on Thursday, May 15, at 8 a.m. in the Trustees' Room. (Please note that this meeting was originally
scheduled for May 14.) All parents are
welcome and urged to attend. Then, on
May 21, the new PACA Board for 2008-09 will hold its first meeting at 8 a.m. in
the Trustees' Room. In other

be picked up at Academy Hall reception desk. |

Columbus Academy sixth-graders honored in national science contest
|
Three sixth-grade
teams from Columbus
Academy recently earned National Honorable Mention in the Toshiba/NSTA ExploraVision competition, meaning they are among the top 10 percent in this
year's national contest. The teams
consisted of: Courtney Gittins, Alexandra Nicola, India Sherman and Kelsey
Sims (Oral Juicy Chewing Gum); Daniel
Kennedy, Jack Lint, Grace Petrie and Spencer York (Home Golf); and Catherine
Lange, Maria Mullin and Elliot Nick (Voice/Mind Activated
Wheelchair). Now in its 16th year,
ExploraVision encourages K-12 students of all interest, skill and ability
levels to create and explore a vision of future technology by combining their
imaginations with the tools of science.

Six Vikings compete in Jesse Owens Track & Field Classic at OSU
|
For the first time in its 23-year history, the
prestigious Jesse Owens Classic at Ohio State University invited competitors from Columbus Academy. Six Vikes competed in four events on Saturday. Individually, senior Jake Beatley finished third in the high jump (6-2) while sophomore Gebby Keny took eighth in the
1,600-meter run (4:40.75) and senior Tyler
Slayman placed 14th in the 3,200-meters (10:36.03). CA's 4x800-meter relay squad of Win Fox '08, Jason Worman '08, Matt
Jaffee '08 and Keny captured third with a time of 8:25.15. For complete high school results from the

Academy alum hosting a book-signing event this Thursday evening
|
Former CA valedictorian Haider Ala Hamoudi '89 will be signing
copies of his new book "Howling in
Mesopotamia" at the Lennox
Towne Shopping
Center's Barnes & Noble (corner of Olentangy River Road
and Kinnear just off Route 315) at 7
p.m. this Thursday, May 8. From July
2003 to June 2005, Hamoudi lived in Iraq helping to rebuild the country
he loves. The son of two Iraqi
expatriates, he brings new insight to the question "What went wrong in Iraq?" To read

Order your Masterworks photos by Friday (Special Friends Day)

With Friday's Special Friends Day in the Lower School quickly approaching, remember the school year with an original 2008 Masterwork (click here to see all of the Masterworks) created and interpreted together as a class with each
student adding their own individual creative touch. Masterworks
Photos and Notecard Sets are
available as thank you cards, holiday cards and gifts. Please click here for the order form
(deadline is May 9). Thank you for your
support of the 2008 Masterworks Collection, a student-created project! All profits benefit PACA and are given to the
school through student financial aid and
enrichment programs.

College Counseling plans parents-only program on Wednesday, May 21
|
|
Senior
parents are invited to join Ohio State University's Director of First-Year
Experience for a program designed to help parents understand what the first
year of college will bring. This joint
program with The Wellington School and Columbus School
for Girls will offer information regarding transition programs, extracurricular
activities, and how parents can help support their students as they go through
the college experience. The event will
take place at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, May
21, in Academy's Schoedinger Theatre.
Also, seniors are required to
attend a special meeting from 11 a.m. until 1:30 p.m. on Monday, June 2
(Senior Projects are due at 10:45 a.m.), in Schoedinger Theatre. Hosted by CA's Alumni Relations and College
Counseling offices, "Officer Bob"
Armstrong and former Academy
students will discuss how to make a successful transition in the first year
of college. Lunch and refreshments will
be provided. For more information on
either of these events, please contact the College
Counseling office at 509-2537.

Final get-together of the MS year planned for eighth-grade moms
|

All eighth-grade
moms are invited to a final breakfast before the Middle School year
